Artist's Statement
Retablos are depictions of religious scenes often honoring saints of the Catholic Church. They are traditionally painted on wood, and sometimes carved. Retablos are portable shrines that became popular with indigenous people after the Spanish conquest of Latin America. These Retablos reflect my own ideas about spirituality and the sacredness of the Earth. By using the iconic house-shape of traditional Retablos combined with images of animals and found objects from nature I’m asking the viewer to expand their horizons and think about how spiritually and physically; all things are connected.
